Day 1: Departure and Arrival

My first glance at Italy!

Hi all! It’s Carmen.

I’ve just gotten settled in my Trastevere apartment, and thought I’d take this opportunity to post. It is currently around 3 in the afternoon, and 86° F (aka warmer than Seattle). It has certainly been a hectic and tiring past 24+ hours for me, travelling from one place to another, but I have already had the opportunity to take in at least a portion of Rome.

What little I have seen of Rome is truly beautiful – more than I could have imagined. Throughout the city, amid homes and businesses, there are several protected ancient ruins, which remind one of Rome’s extensive past. It is amazing to think that these structures have (for the most part) stood the test of time and war.

Although I have not yet visited museums or these historical sites in person, the streets are art in themselves. Buildings laced with ivy, ancient cobblestone paving, and locals sitting outside to enjoy the cool shade simultaneously create a sense of history and of homeliness. I cannot help but feel awe at even the exterior of this city, or be in disbelief that, after all this time and anticipation, I am finally here.

I am aware that I am barely scratching the surface of Rome, its history, its residents, and Italy in general. In the next five weeks, I look forward to getting beneath that surface and sharing what I find with you.
